Each year, ACERT's awards program recognizes excellence in Campus Emergency Response through four awards. They are all described below. In addition to the four awards, ACERT also adds individuals to its President's list annually who have demonstrated exceptional work as a responder or administrator on their team. All the awards are presented at the National Conferences of Campus Emergency Responders in February. The following awards are given annually:

Past Award Winners

Dr. Tom Macfarlane Team of the Year

This award recognizes an ACERT member team that has demonstrated extraordinary endeavours such as exceptional emergency care, training, overall improvement, communication, administration, or overcoming administrative problems.

Specifically, nominations should address the following areas:

  • Team development (training, team building, team initiatives)
  • Community development (training, PR, promotion of team in community, relations with other groups)
  • Emergency care (quality of care, skills/strengths, leadership, new initiatives)
  • Administration (record keeping, office work, teamwork of coordinators, interaction with supervisory body, representation of ACERT goals)
  • Special achievements (new equipment/quals, overcoming problems/obstacles on their team)

Each member team is encouraged to apply for this award.

Beyond the Call of Duty

This award is presented annually to a responder who has demonstrated exceptional individual effort in response, administration, communication, and development. The nominee must be a current member in good standing of a current ACERT member team. The nominator may not be the actual nominee.

Specifically, nominations should address:

  • commitment level
  • tasks undertaken over the year
  • role on the team and in relation to experience/number of years on team
  • opinion of person by others on team
  • development of team in some manner
  • value to team
  • general attitude and disposition to team, others, public
  • campus emergency response skills - first aid, communication, leadership, initiative

Web Site of the Year

This award does not require a nomination. Each ACERT member team web site will be reviewed by our Webmaster and a panel of "web experts" that include the ACERT Executive one week prior to the NCCER.

The sites are judged on four criteria:

  • aesthetics & design
  • functionality
  • quality of writing and content
  • technical efficiency

Owen Charters Foundation & Development

This award is presented annually to an individual who has been active in ACERT and who has put exceptional time and effort into:

  • developing the association
  • creating a foundation of leadership and guidance for subsequent boards
  • promoting professionalism and communication in the public image
  • encouraging spirit, unity, and leadership in the campus emergency response community in Canada

The nominator may not be the actual nominee.
