Who Can Be a Judge?

Judges are selected based on relevant experience and qualifications. Ideal applicants include individuals with previous experience as:

  • First Aid, CPR, EFR, or EMR instructors

  • Healthcare or emergency response professionals (ie nurses, physicians or paramedics)

  • Experienced trainers, educators, or evaluators in emergency care

Submission of a judge application is an expression of interest only. Not all applicants will be selected.


Application & Selection Process
  1. Interested individuals submit a Judge Expression of Interest Form

  2. Applications are reviewed by the organizing committee

  3. Only applicants with relevant and sufficient experience will be invited to continue

  4. Selected applicants must complete a mandatory online judge training module

  5. Final judging assignments are confirmed based on event needs and availability

Completion of the training module is required in order to judge at NCCER.


Judge Training (Mandatory)

All selected judges must complete an online training module prior to the conference. The training covers:

  • Competition structure and flow

  • Scoring tools and evaluation criteria

  • Expectations for professionalism and consistency

  • Safety protocols and scenario management

Info for Volunteer Patients

Volunteer patients may be asked to participate as:

  • Simulated patients (injured or ill individuals)

  • Bystanders or witnesses

  • Participants in Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) scenarios

Roles may involve sitting, standing, or lying down for short periods of time. Volunteers are never expected to perform tasks beyond their comfort level.


What to Expect
  • A briefing before each scenario explaining your role

  • Optional use of moulage (makeup) or props to simulate injuries

  • Interaction with competition teams and judges

  • Supervision by event staff at all times

Safety is the top priority, and scenarios may be paused or stopped if concerns arise.


Dress Code
  • Comfortable clothing suitable for indoor or outdoor settings

  • Clothing that can get dirty or marked with makeup (recommended)

Additional instructions will be provided in advance if needed.


Health, Safety & Accessibility
  • Volunteers will never be asked to perform real medical procedures

  • Physical contact is limited to light, simulated care (e.g., bandaging)

  • Accommodations can be made for accessibility needs

  • Volunteers may opt out of any role at any time

Photography & Media
Volunteers may be photographed or recorded for event documentation or promotion. Consent preferences will be collected during sign-up.
